Buying a Hot Tub

Hot Tubs are a great relaxation destination and much more. A hot tub can relieve stress, offer you a better night's sleep, rejuvenate sore muscles, and a great place to get the family or friends together. Hot Tubs are also a natural remedy for people who suffer from Arthritis pain, the hot water soak can relieve pain.

Owning a hot tub will perhaps be one of the best investments in your family and lifestyle that you make. Choosing the right hot tub is not as easy as it is to relax in one. "Where you buy your hot tub is just as important as what hot tub you buy." There are great hot tubs and lousy dealerships, and there are awful hot tubs and good dealers. How to find the great dealer and a great hot tub?

A great hot tub retailer will only sell hot tubs and supporting products. A good dealer will probably sell hot tubs, swimming pools, and supporting products. A mediocre hot tub dealer will sell everything from gaming room products, furniture, and grills and not really have a grip on what business they want to be in. A hot tub will eventually break down and require service, make sure who you buy from services what they sell and does not sub contract the service out. The Hot Tub Industry is full of fly by nighters here today and gone tomorrow dealers who promise the world; ask questions and lots of them. Below is a sample of questions to ask the dealer:

1. How long have they been in business?

2. How many brands of hot tubs do they carry, and for how long?

3. Do they service what they sell and not subcontract it out?

4. Do they deliver to where you want it placed? Stay away from Driveway delivery

5. What accreditations do they have? BBB, National Spa and Pool Institute NSPI, Manufacture accreditations. Chemical school accreditations.

Obviously the hot tub you purchase is extremely important. There are many manufactures all with their own story to tell. Great manufactures have a dealer network of local retailers who know it's a great product and stand behind it. Just because a dealer sells it doesn't make it good either. If the Hot Tub is not properly engineered and designed for energy efficiency it's not worth having in your back yard. A hot tub with little to no insulation is a bad investment and could cost you hundreds of dollars per month to run and own. Taking care for the hot tub is another important feature to look at.

Owning a hot tub is great but if it's hard to maintain you'll think twice about owning it. Ease of maintenance is key. Filtration, Filtration, Filtration did I say filtration? Ninety percent of keeping the water clean is filtration, so yes I did say filtration and I'll say it again; Filtration. Look for a hot tub that filters the water with a small circulation pump 24/7 and that has a minimum of 50 sq feet of filtration, and the bigger the hot tub the more filtration it will need. While chemicals and water care products only make up 10% of maintaining clean sanitized water it too is important to the ease of maintaining a hot tub. In my 30 years of hot tub experience one system stands out and that is a combination of silver ion "Nature2", ozone, and small doses of chlorine "sodium di-chlor". Products to stay away from are Bromine Tablets, Salt Chlorinators, and Hydrogen peroxide based sanitizers. They are more hassle then they are worth, they are expensive, and you'll hate your hot tub if your using them. Other maintenance is the cabinet, look for a hot tub made with polymer fake looking wood.

Jets are important but not the quantity of jets. A bad hot tub will have hundreds of jets. You would think opposite but the reality is the more jets there are the weaker they will be, the more power the hot tub will consume, and the more possibilities for a leak to develop. Instead look for a wide variety of jets that offer you different massages. For even more information check the links below.

Great info! Don't be afraid, however, of looking at hot tubs for sale online. There are plenty of reputable dealers on the Internet who can help you just the same as a dealer.

While I agree Casey, most online retailers only offer driveway delivery. Another problem the consumer faces when buying online is the support and service which can equal lack of. While I am no longer involved in this industry, far too many times I had people come into the store who bought a hot tub at a home show or online and once the hot tub was delivered so was the support for the product. This is true of local dealers though too. They promise the world and then they take your money and are gone tomorrow. Thats why I say "Where you buy your hot tub is just as important as what hot tub you buy."
